On Tuesday, February 6th, Senior Anne Runde received the YWCA Young Woman of Distinction Award, an award given out to exceptional students in the community. Runde was unaware that she was in the running for the award until she was notified by the entire Craig administrative team and Superintendent Steve Pophal during her second hour.
“Dr. Bjoin came and surprised me in my mom’s (Diane Runde, Craig Agriculture Teacher) class with a bunch of staff members and my friends to tell me,” said Runde.
Runde was nominated by Dr. Bjoin for her involvement in numerous extracurricular activities.
“It is a very prestigious award,” noted Principal Bjoin.
“Anne is an accomplished student, a talented athlete, a fine young woman, and a most deserving recipient of this award,” she said.
In presenting the award, the YWCA noted Runde’s involvement in National Honor Society, National Science Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, the Rock County Fury, and her strong commitment to the Craig chapter of FFA.
As president of the Craig FFA, she is involved with organizing fundraisers and projects that help both the organization and the community.
Before the harvest this fall, Runde helped to plant and distribute pink pumpkin seeds, and sell the pumpkins at the Janesville Farmers Market.
The profits were donated to the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation, an organization that helps fund Breast Cancer Research.
Runde also occasionally volunteers her time at the local YMCA through a program called Partners in Active Learning (PALS), where she teaches elementary school kids about her experiences in agriculture.
“They meet once a month, and I can’t always go because I’m fairly busy with work and school,” Runde says, “but I try to go when I can.”
The award does not come with a scholarship, but it nevertheless carries a lot of weight in terms of college and career access. The YWCA will hold a banquet dinner in her honor in April.
