Craig Student Athletes Sign National Letters of Intent
November 29 By Phoebe Werner
On Wednesday, November 8, four of Craig’s senior student athletes signed national letters of intent to participate in collegiate athletics.
Erin Donagan will be swimming at Oakland University, a NCAA Division 1 school and a perennial champion of the Summit League, in Rochester, Michigan.
“I liked the school. I liked the coaches and the team. It just seemed like the right thing to do,” said Donagan, when talking about why she chose Oakland University.
Erin Donagan will graduate as the most decorated swimmer in the history of Craig High School. She received six individual records, three relay records, medaled at state, and is a Scholastic All American.
Her past swim season has been described as “outstanding” by coach Jonathan Hopkins. “She has balanced swim, college visits, and academics. Between it all she swam about 310 miles,” said Coach Hopkins.
Erin Donagan is full of ambition, dedication, and leadership. These aspects will help her excel in Oakland University’s program.
Noah Berghammer, a four year varsity participant, signed to play baseball for the University of Minnesota, a Big Ten school, in Minneapolis-St. Paul.
Coach Vic Herbst said Berghammer is a “very versatile” player because he is both an infielder and a pitcher.
Noah wanted to thank God for giving him his talent, his parents for all the time they put in for traveling, his siblings for all of their coaching and emotional support, and all of his coaches throughout his career that helped him become the player that he is today.
Berghammer chose the University of Minnesota because it, “checked all the boxes.”
He liked the academic program, the facilities, its tradition, and the family like atmosphere around the team.
The University of Minnesota was just the right fit for Berghammer.
Jacob Campbell, a four year varsity member and first team all state catcher, signed to play baseball for the University of Illinois, a Big Ten school, in Champaign-Urbana.
Campbell chose the University of Illinois because of its academics and athletics. “When I visited I knew it was the place for me,” said Campbell.
Jacob thanked his family, coaches, and teachers for helping him get to where he is now. He has had fun these past few years and is proud of winning state his freshman year.
JJ Brennan , a two year varsity outfielder, signed his letter of intent for Judson University, a member of the NAIA and top team in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletics Conference.
“I loved everything about Judson,” said Brennan, when talking about the school. Coach Vic Herbst mentioned that Brennan has grown immensely as an offensive player over the years, and Coach Herbst “can’t wait to watch him chase down fly balls” at the collegiate level.
All three baseball players thanked Brad Fitzke for his training over the years. “He trained all of us to be better athletes and people,” said Jacob Campbell.
It was all in all an impressive and exciting night for Craig swim and baseball.
