Cougars claw Middleton to earn season sweep
by david holmquist
In years past, Middleton was a difficult opponent for the Cougars.
In 2015, the Cardinals broke the hearts of the Cougars in dealing them a sectional final defeat and denying the Cougars trips to State. This year, the Cougars have turned the tables. Behind a suffocating defense and sharp shooting from the free throw line, the girls basketball team defeated Middlton 64-49 on Friday, January 26, for their second win of the year against the powerful Cardinals. Bob Suter Court was a festive atmosphere. The pep band rocked the house with crowd favorites “Hey Baby,” “Sweet Caroline,” and “Cleveland Rocks.” The halftime half court shootout was as fun as it always is. For $1, fans young and old took shots from half court for the chance to win a free pizza from Mac’s Pizza Shack. Unfortunately, no one made a shot this time. But best of all, the Cougars took down Middleton to gain the season sweep. It was one of--if not the--best defensive performances of the season for the young team. No seniors are on the roster, and despite their tough loss to crosstown rival Parker, the Cougars are growing up quickly and seem to be hitting their stride at just the right time. |
The pep band keeps the atmosphere spirited. Brooke Parkhurst is introduced, slapping hands with Sarah Gregg (2) and oining Emily Pierson (12). In the first half, Hannah Dunlavy (24) applies defensive pressure, and Claudia Fieiras (20) dishes the ball to Cassie Goswick (21). In the second half, Pierson (with #15 Rileigh Elgas ready to take a three pointer if needed) and Fieiras drive the lane against Middleton defenders, a stragegy that was a key factor in the Cougar victory.
