Craig soccer hits early speed bump in a great season

On April 7, 2018, the Cougars stepped on the eld to face a formidable opponent.
Looking into the crowd, the Cougars fought their hearts out, but lost 2-1 against the pre-season ranked (#8) team D.C. Everest.
The first half started out quickly for the Cougars, with Greta Hanthorn scoring a goal in the rst ve minutes of the game. The Cougars led early 1-0.
The ball went back and forth for the rest of the first half, with most of the action being held on the opposing team’s side.
Commenting on the preparation of the team, Senior Kaitlyn Shanks said, “We have depth for every position. Everyone on the team is fully capable of playing anywhere on the eld and that’s a really good characteristic for a team to have.”
A chill hung in the air during halftime and the crowd shivered with anticipation. The energy of the spectators during the game was high, with numerous encouraging shouts to Craig athletes.
Within the first few minutes of the second half, Sarah Lorge scored from D.C. Everest assisted by Maddie Simp- son scored to tie the game 1-1.
The Cougars continued to fight hard, but eventually D.C. Everest’s brutality began to wear on them.
At around 90 minutes into the game, Madisyn Irwin scored.
The game was a fight from minute 1 to minute 90, with Craig shooting ten times at the opposing team’s goal. The game was brutal, with 11 fouls by D.C. Everest and only 3 by Craig.
D.C. Everest is a non-conference team that is known for their impressive soccer skills and physicality. In a pre- season coaches poll, the team was ranked eighth in the state.
Sophomore Hannah Dunlavy displayed exceptional defensive skills, stopping over a dozen attempts to get close to the goal. Senior Kaitlyn Shanks made numerous attempts to score. Junior Greta Hanthorn played exceptional offense, while making several attempts to score. Hanthorn scored the team’s only goal.
“We have sharp shooters up front and a super solid defense. The front and the back are connected by an amazingly talented mid eld. I couldn’t ask for a better group to play with,” stated Senior Kaitlyn Shanks.
The Cougars are 6-2-1 this season and have scored 21 conference goals, including 10 against Parker in the game on May 1st.
The Cougars scored 6 points apiece in the games against Evansville and Waukesha.
In recent events, the Cougars have play teams like Parker and Madison LaFolette, tallying several more victories.
With the game against D.C. Everest being the only loss this season, the Cougars are preparing for their champion- ship season.
“We are getting into a groove where everyone is working well together and playing to our strengths,” stated Shanks.
