"Go Big Blue"
By kayla dawkins
On Jan. 25th, the Craig High School band opened the doors to the fifth graders of Roosevelt, Jefferson, Kennedy, Harrison, Jackson, and Monroe elementary schools. It’s been a tradition for many years that the fifth graders come to Craig and play with the high school pep band.
The fifth graders arrived before the high schoolers, so they can get their shirts and figure out how to get from the band to the auditorium. Some high schoolers were there early, so they can help with directing the fifth graders.
After high schoolers had arrived, and fifth graders were all sat in their seats in the auditorium, band director, Jake Wiele, came on stage to talk to the fifth graders about what was going to happen and how it was going to happen. The fifth graders were very polite listening to Mr. Wiele and stopping when he stopped.
Once it was time, the high school students lead the fifth graders to the gym and helped them get all settled in the bleachers. The fifth graders only played for the little time between the JV boys basketball game and the Varsity boys basketball game, but boy did they enjoy it. Playing the two tunes they knew, “They Hey Song” and “Go Big Blue,” they definitely loved screaming “HEY!” as loud as they can during “The Hey Song.”
When they weren’t playing, the high schoolers did and the fifth graders sang to the tunes like “Firework” and Counting Stars.”
The fifth graders left having fun and enjoying the amazing time with the high school pep band.
