Lady Cougars are Ready to Tumble!
December 21 by phoebe Werner
At the annual Cougar Invite, on December 9, the Craig Gymnastics team scored 118.95 points, placing fourth out of eight teams.
Coaches, Jean Welch, Stephanie Hanson, and Nicole McBride, were pleasantly surprised at how well the team competed at their first meet. The team welcomed new faces to the varsity competition floor, Reagan Boehlke(10) on the balance beam and Jayden Egger (9) an all around gymnast. Two Craig gymnasts, Ariyana Stalsberg and Phoebe Werner, placed 7th place on two of their events at the Craig Invite. Their performances have made them more con dent for the rest of the season. The team also competed against Madison West on Thursday, December 14, losing by a few points. Though it wasn’t the team’s best competition, the gymnasts did well individually. Jayden Egger (9) placed third in the all around com- petition. Ariyana Stalsberg (10) placed first on the floor exercise, tied for first on the uneven bars, and third on vault. Phoebe Werner(10) won the all around com- petition , tied for first on the vault, and placed third on floor exercise. Captain, Alexis Andrews (12), placed second on the floor exercise and tied for third on balance beam. A fun, new Cougar tradition is after every stuck beam routine in competition, the coaches have to do ten pushups! “It motivates the team by working together to reach our goal of five beam routines without falls at each competition. It helps us work harder,” said captain Alexis Andrews. The girls are more motivated than ever, and the accomplishment of sticking their beam routine is an even sweeter victory. Though they are a young team, the gymnasts aren’t intimidated by older teams and have proven that they can hold their own at both large invitationals and at dual meets. The team continues to upgrade skills and clean their routines in hopes of scoring a 125 by the end of the season. |

Upcoming season is full of excitement
november 30 by Phoebe werner
Craig’s very own gymnastics team is looking forward to having a very exciting season. All of the gymnasts have come back strong and ready for the season ahead.
Head Coach, Jean Welch, was voted Wisconsin’s Coach of the Year by the Coaches Association. She has been coaching high school gymnastics at Craig for the past 29 years. Within her coaching career, her team won three conference meets, and she produced fourteen state medalists and three state champions. Let’s just say, she knows what she’s doing.
Coach Welch loves the sport of gymnastics because it’s an all around sport that makes you strong both mentally and physically. She continues to coach because she loves gymnastics, the girls, and seeing the team improve.
Coach Stephanie Hanson, an Earth and AP Environmental Science teacher at Craig High School, was a Craig gymnast for four years and was voted MVP three years in a row.
Coach Hanson coaches because she, “loves working with kids and helping them reach their goals.”
Coach Hanson loves the “mix between the artistic ability and athletic ability” that it takes to be a gymnast, it’s one of her favorite parts of the sport.
The gymnastics team’s goals for this season are “to keep improving and be the best team we can be,” said Coach Jean Welch.
This season’s gymnasts to watch are Alexis Andrews (12) on floor exercise, Gracie Hill (10) on balance beam, Ariyana Stalsberg (10) on the uneven bars, and Phoebe Werner (10) on vault and balance beam.
The varsity team’s first meet is the Craig Invite on December 9th, which will be an exciting meet due to the fact that it’s the first one of the season. The Craig vs Parker meet is at home this year, which will be a very intense meet.
The team this year has a lot of depth, and Coach Hanson is “excited to see how this year turns out,” for it is going to be an action-packed season.
