Twelve students from Craig High School’s Investment Club departed on Thursday, February 15th for a field trip to St. Louis. The trip spanned four days and provided the students with valuable experiences including touring the Federal Reserve Bank, listening to lead economist William Emmons, touring Washington University, listening to a finance presentation by the Professor of Finance, Radha Gopolan, and touring Olin Business School, as well as exploring the city.
“That trip is something I will remember for the rest of my high school career,” stated President Parker Klementz
Twelve members of the club chose to go on the trip, including 11 seniors and 1 junior. The students raised over 3,000 dollars of donations in two weeks, gathering donations from financial advising firms, banks, and parents. One of the key donations came from Property Revival Realty who selected Mr. Miles as a Great Classrooms Initiative Educator. Property Revival Realty selects one educator for each quarter in order to “have a direct impact on the students.”
“Educators like you are the reason our local schools are strong. Your club’s mission, coupled with its trip to St. Louis targets a great need in our community...Providing students knowledge of financial literacy and the stock market builds a foundation for their future success,” wrote CEO of Property Revival Realty, Brian Lawton, in his letter commending the Craig High School Investment Club and their advisor.
On Friday, February 16th, the Investment Club began their day with a trip to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. The lead economist for the Center of Household Financial Stability, William Emmons talked to the students preceding their tour of the bank. Emmons lecture informed the students on the complexity of the Federal Reserve and the direction of the markets.
“He gave us his take on a lot of current issues with monetary policy,” said the club’s President Parker Klementz.
The Federal Reserve controls all the money in the United States and increases and decreases supply when necessary to prevent drastic periods of inflation and deflation.
The students traveled to Washington University, where they met Megan Waite, the Associate Director of Admissions. Once at the University, the club proceeded on a formal tour, followed by a finance presentation. The Professor of Finance and the Director of Masters in Corporation Finance and Wealth Asset Management, Radha Gopolan lectured “about how the market is really unstable right now and the corrections that have been happening recently is really helping the market stabilize and make investing better in the future,” summarized President Parker Klementz.
Club Treasurer Mac Ryan commented that the most important piece of knowledge gained from this trip was that “we got unique perspectives on markets we knew little about and learned that the volatility of markets can help determine markets of the present and future.”
The students enjoyed both the educational and cultural aspects of the trip, with the cultural aspects including a trip to the Gateway Arch, visiting the St. Louis City Museum and the St. Louis Art Museum, as well as the St. Louis Zoo.
“There was a lot of cultural aspects..It was fun being with everyone,” stated the club’s Vice President Ross March.
The trip was suggested by club advisor, Brandon Miles, who used his connections to plan an educational and fun trip for the students. The main purpose of the trip included the tour of the Federal Reserve Bank and the lectures by lead economist William Emmons and Washington University Professor, Radha Gopolan.
“He has a lot of connections, so it was easy for us to meet with some really smart people,” commented club VP Ross March.
Craig High School’s Investment Club began last year at the recommendation of Financial Advisor and teacher Mr. Miles. After noting the interest of several students, Mr. Miles recommended that Parker Klementz and Ross March create a club to cater to students interested in investing and learning about stocks and the current market. The students created the club out of interest for investment and to help them prepare outside the classroom for the future.
“I just like learning about stocks and the stock market...having the knowledge now going into college puts me a step ahead of other kids,” explained club President Parker Klementz.
The club meets every other week with an emphasis on current issues within the market. Daily meetings include mini-lessons, discussions on bitcoins, current investments, market trends, stock options, career options, and other finance-based topics.
Club meetings “teach far more than we could learn inside the classroom” and are a great place “to form comradeship,” stated Investment Club’s Treasurer Mac Ryan.
