The Classic jack the ripper story with a twist
by madalyn thompson
This past month I’ve miraculously been able to dive into an actual book that I really wanted to read.
Something which had seemed nearly impossible recently, but in reality wasn’t. In fact I found a wonderful read that combined everything I love: mystery, thriller, fantasy, historical, and just a hint of romance. Therefore, making an absolutely perfect book to take one’s mind off the dreary and headache worthy reality. The book takes place in London, England 1888, a year that is immensely memorable for the gruesome and bloody murders that occurred throughout the year. The story follows seventeen year old Audrey Rose Wadsworth who is far from what a young lady during that time should’ve been. Instead of fancying things like expensive fabrics for dresses, pinning over the latest suitor who’d just fallen into the wealth factor, or looking forward to the next tea party that consisted of nothing more then gossip. No, none of these factors made up who Audrey Rose was, far from it. Instead she yearned for nothing more then to be an apprentice under her uncle and learn the ways of Forensic Medicine. Which in more cases than not consisted of a bloody cadaver lying on a metal dissection table in her uncle’s basement surrounded by medical tools. That was the world she lived in, or the secret life she lived in which she wished came with a little less sneaking around. However, when bodies begin to drop like flies she believes it’s her duty to figure out exactly what the cause is behind the gory deaths that keep popping up around London. On this journey she has to ask help from an unlikely person, Thomas Cresswell. An egocentric boy that would tell you himself he knows absolutely everything there is to know, and can read a singular person and tell you exactly where they’ve been the last week. With Thomas’s help they begin to track down exactly who these women were before they were killed. Quickly learning that two of the murder victims were closer to Audrey Rose then she ever thought possible. With theories continuing to blossom, and evidence seeming to disappear in front of their very eyes. Not to mention eyewitnesses who are more than capable of cracking the case wide open are bleeding out with their throats slit in abandoned alleyways. Though by the end of their investigation Audrey Rose may just wish she’d never went looking for Jack the Ripper to begin with. A mystery that will have you reeling and turning pages quicker then you can say bloody murder. A new outlook to who this mass serial killer may very well been. Stalking Jack the Ripper By Kerri Maniscalco- a perfect read to keep you on your toes in the dead of winter. |
