the wilkes anomaly: what lies beneath?
by logan mullan
This issue’s crazy con- spiracy theory will center around the elusive and mysterious continent of Antarctica, speci cally, the “Wilkes Land gravity anomaly.”
It was first uncovered in 2006.
This mysterious continent is the only uninhabited land mass and has been that way for thousands of years,
so there is not telling the secrets this continent is holding. This massive gravity anomaly was spotted by NASA satellites pass- ing through gravitational anomalies in the atmosphere above Antarctica. They indicated the presence of a huge object sitting in the middle of a 190-mile- wide impact crater, the size of Ohio, and at a minimum depth of 2,782 ft.
Due to the ice above this object, scientists are unable to determine what is exactly under the ice, so the officially supported theory is that it’s a massive asteroid more than twice the size of the Chicxulub, the space rock which wiped out the dinosaurs.
Satellites in orbit have to avoid the area if they have highly sensitive equipment attached to them, which causes some concern among the scientific community and gathers great curiosity among people online.
Conspiracies centering around this giant anomaly range from old Nazi bases to hollow earth entrances, even alien bases or even outlandish theories of
Atlantis.
However, none of these can be verified or made true since there are no other ways offending out than drilling down to the anomaly, which is almost impossible considering that the ever-shifting ice shelf of the Arctic could possibly destroy the drill.
Not to mention the cost of such an endeavor and the political maneuvering to be able to carry out such an operation on the icy continent.
Though whatever may lie down there, techno- logical advances may one day allow humans to find out what lies below those murky depths of ice.
