On April 12, 2018, State Champion Peyton Sippy signed her NLI to compete in Cross Country and Track with UW-Madison.
“Peyton’s had a tremendous high school career to this point...Peyton’s not only a great athlete, but a great student, and a great kid,” noted Athletic Director Ben McCormick. Continuing, Mr. McCormick said, “She’s very committed to what she does and as a result, she’s here today.”
Surrounded in a room filled with her Track and Cross Country teammates, Sippy thanked her dad, coaches, teachers, and teammates for pushing her along the way. Several of Sippy’s teachers wrote recommendation letters on her behalf. Sippy’s dad helped to set up the connections that allowed her to be recruited by UW-Madison.
“She’s just been a great example of what it’s like to prepare and perform at an elite level,” stated Head Track Coach Brad Troeger.
Sippy also noted that her teammates made daily workouts more bearable.
“Without a team, you don’t really have anything to work towards,” commented Sippy.
Sippy chose to attend the university due to its reputation for academic and athletic excellence. Many of Sippy’s competitors and friends went on to attend the university, making it a comfortable, but competitive atmosphere.

“I’ve looked up to them (the UW-Madison Signees) since I was a freshman and I wanted to follow in their footsteps..Wisconsin is just a great school,” expressed Sippy.
Additionally, Sippy decided to attend the university due to a strong academic program in her ideal major. Sippy also chose UW-Madison to stay close to her family.
Comically, Troeger said, “It’s a good thing UW-Madison got ahold of her because I think the Post Office was looking at her. (Rain, Hail, Dark of Night)”
As a four-time WIAA State Qualifier, Sippy reflected on her four years. During her freshman year, the Boy’s Cross Country team qualified for State, making her experience more enjoyable. For the other two years, Sippy battled the stresses of race weekend with only a few other teammates.
Sippy noted that her favorite memory was being able to compete at the WIAA State Meet her senior year with the Girl’s Cross Country team, making the weekend a team event, with an emphasis on “WE CAN.”
As one of the few individuals who have received the rare honor of the State Champion plaque, Sippy’s hard work, dedication, and resilience to adversity will continue to inspire Craig athletes after she graduates.
“What you missed was 5/6 AM in the pool for year, late nights rollowing and icing...all the weight training, that is the really hard work,” said Head Cross Country Coach Brian Lawton.
