On March 16th, some of the AP Government's students left for their trip to Washington DC and came back on March 24th.
The AP Government trip is where students in the class study and research on their topic go to Washington DC. When they are there they get interviews to learn more about their topic and after they get back, they have to write a paper about their topic. 4 of the best papers get to have their articles in the Gazette. Brielle Valet said, “My topic was nice because I was able to learn a different perspective from each person I interview.” The student's that were on the trip and their topics were Abbey Fillhouer: First Amendment rights, Yueqi Chen: U.S./China relations, Jessica Elred: Climate change, Joseph Hoeser: Nuclear North Korea, Wyatt Hyzer: Climate change, Michael Kellett: Counterterrorism, Cooper Kennedy: Affordable Care Act, Sarah Kubiak: U.S./European Union relations, Logan Mullan: Government surveillance, Ashley Partello: Euthanasia, Anthony Schrader: Counterterrorism, Hayden Schumann: Nuclear North Korea, Ayana Smith-Kooiman: Foster care reform, |

The students did some many interesting things besides just interview for their topic. Like going to see the Broadway show, “In The Heights” in the Kennedy Center on the show’s opening night. Sarah Kubiak said, “My favorite thing besides interview, was going to the museums.” During the Washington DC trip, some of the AP Gov. kids got a chance to watch a panel held at the Newseum. The program had some of the Parkland students who were on the Newspaper, come and talk about their experiences with the shooting. What the students talked about was what they were doing during the time of the shooting and how they were going to the paper. Some were actual in their Newspaper class and some were in other class. They then explain that the way they were writing was by talking about the students and teachers that lost their lives. They also said that they weren’t writing the name of the shooter because they didn’t want to give him coverage, so, they naming as the shooter. |
