robotics competition: a learning experience
by jeff perri
Last month Craig’s Engineering Club particiapted in the robot competition, which was briefly covered in the last issue.
But that article left out some important details. The competition took place in Milwaukee. One part of the competition involved the team submerging the robot in the water and moving it around and picking up objects. Sadly, Craig’s bot didn’t perform that well, but this competition was a first for Craig, and they did pretty well, especially since they didn’t know that much. The second part involved setting up a table and putting a poster up for all people to walk around and look at. It allowed other teams to get some ideas so they can improve their bot. Also, the teams could ask each other questions and tips on the best materials and sites for equipment. The last part of the competition was a presentation in front of some judges. Teams present themselves as a company and explain what they did to get sponsoring, who did what on the robot, and how they thought out and planned their robot, all while answering the judges’ questions. The competition ended with a guest speaker and awards to the winning teams. The top three teams were announced, and Craig was not one of them, so they didn’t find out where the placed. |
But to the members of the team, their placement doesn’t matter.
What matters is that they got to experiment something new. Also, another thing is the seniors this year when they leave will have some new knowledge that might help them down the road. |
